FAQs
What is considered homegrown produce?
Fruits, vegetables, flowers, eggs, or seeds that you grew or produced.
If I register to give produce, who will be able to see my address?
The community map will go live by 7pm on August 14 and will stay online until 3pm on August 15. Anyone who visits the website will be able to view your location.
What if I’m not comfortable sharing my address on the community map?
There are a few options, and no matter how you participate, we would love to see that you’ve joined the event by tagging us on Instagram (@PDXYardShare)!Instead of sharing your location on the community map, you could spread the word that you’re participating among your friends, family, and neighbors.
Coordinate a group give, and have someone else share your produce at their location. You can either coordinate this among your family, friends, and neighbors, or you can reach out to help you create a Giving Hub!
Set up at your local park and give us that address (with details about exactly where you’ll be). If you do this, please keep in mind that you’ll need a permit to set up a table. So, you could bring your produce to share in a box or on a blanket instead!
Do I have to be home during the event, or can I just leave my produce out?
You can leave your produce out in a box or on table with a sign. Part of our goal is to help neighbors get to know each other, so we absolutely encourage you to hang outside and get to know your gatherers. However, please do what you’re comfortable with and able to.
Can I gather produce if I’m not giving?
Yes, absolutely! We recognize that not everyone has the space or capacity to garden, so we encourage everyone to get out and gather!
How do I gather?
The community map will go live by 7pm on August 14 and will stay online until 3pm on August 15. We encourage you to gather in your neighborhood, but please feel free to gather wherever you see a location.
Please be respectful when gathering:If you don’t see produce outside, don’t knock on the door. We’ll be updating the map throughout the event, however, we may not be able to remove locations who have run out of produce right away.
If there’s no one outside to greet you and there is produce available, you can still gather. Please just leave some for the next gatherer, so more folks can enjoy!
What happens if Portland is experiencing a heat wave or wildfire smoke conditions on the day of the event?
We take health and safety seriously, and we want givers and gatherers to take care of themselves first and foremost! If temperatures reach/exceed 100 degrees or the Air Quality Index (AQI) is Unhealthy, we’ll cancel. If we cancel, we’ll reschedule the event within a couple weeks.
How do I remove my address from the map?
Please email us at pdxyardshare(at)gmail(dot)com to let us know you’d like your location removed. We’ll also be removing all locations at the end of each event!
What should I do with leftover produce that wasn’t gathered?
We recommend you consider donating to:Portland Fruit Tree Project’s Fruit Fridge is always open and you can drop off your produce at any time.
What if I want to give store-bought produce?
We’re focused on homegrown, backyard produce for our event.
